Project Cargo Successes: -
Digester Heavy Lift/Transport
Cargo Project: Transportation of digesters from Pt. Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia to Nackawic, New Brunswick.
Duration: May 2007
Terminal: Navy Island Terminals
Stevedore: Logistec Stevedoring
Project Team: Irving Equipment, Logistec, Lenron, New Brunswick Southern Railway, Atlantic Towing
Project Description:
- A total of 7 x digesters weighing between 70 and 80 metric tonnes, and over 6.0 metres in diameter were barged from Nova Scotia to the West Side Terminal in Saint John by Atlantic Towing.
- The digesters were discharged by Logistec and subsequently loaded to NBSR railcar, railed to Harvey, then carried by Lenron specialized truck and trailers for road transport to Nackawic.
Specialized Equipment Used: A 300T all terrain crane was used to transfer the digesters to shore at the Port of Saint John, and used a MPKE360 transporter to move the cargo to the rail siding on the terminal.
Outcome: Despite the complexity of moving such large pieces by multi-mode transportation, the project was a complete success and the digesters are being used today to produce Nackawic’s Viscose Cellulose woodpulp.
