Cargo Project: Export of Complete Shipbuilding Facility
Duration: September 2006
Terminal: Lower Cove
Stevedore: Empire Stevedoring
Project Team: Irving Equipment, Fleetway Facility Services, Rhode and Liesenfeld, Atlantic Towing
Project Description: To move the entire contents of Saint John Shipbuilding facility to Lower Cove Terminal in preparation for sea transport to India.
Irving Equipment and Fleetway Facility Services worked together to ensure every piece was disassembled, catalogued and marked for reassembly. A staging area was established at Lower Cove Terminal, and piece by piece, every item was positioned in anticipation of the arrival the deep sea heavy lift ship.
Specialized Equipment Used: Given the number and variety of the items to be staged, transport of the items from the yard site was carried out by regular flatbeds, oversize floats, multi wheeled transporters, shuttle barge, 8500 ton “Kent carrier”, and 200T hydraulic Demag cranes.
Outcome: The key to the successful completion of this project was a meticulous paper and electronic tracking system, which recorded and identified the location of every individual item in real time. Not one piece was mislaid during the entire process, and the yard was re-assembled in India, where it continues to turn out new ships.
