Saint John Port Authority Launches Break-Bulk Website
2010-05-18
(Saint John)- One stop shopping for those looking to ship breakbulk and project cargo, that is the aim of the Saint John Port Authority and their partners with the launching of the new website www.sjbreakbulk.com. Simply stated, "breakbulk" is any cargo that is shipped in packing units that are countable such as cartons, cases, crates, bales, or drums, but not containerized. While project cargo consists of any cargo that is heavy or oversized and handled typically on a project by project basis. Items include manufacturing equipment, factory components, power equipment, etc.
"The website is an important step in the Port Authority's Break Bulk and Project Cargo Development Strategy," said Capt. Al Soppitt, President and CEO of the Saint John Port Authority. "The purpose of this initiative is to provide information to assist in making an informed decision about Break Bulk and Project Cargo shipments - a one stop website for anyone interested in shipping break bulk or project cargo through the Port of Saint John. The information provided on the website relates not only to the Port, but all suppliers involved during a project cargo shipment or a continuous service for a specific break bulk commodity. Specifically, the website targets freight forwarders, break bulk shipping lines, developers, and manufacturers around the world."
Saint John is the largest breakbulk handling port in the region, with a dedicated terminal, ample open areas, and warehouse space. The port has developed business partnerships with local stevedores, terminal operators, equipment suppliers, and service providers to ensure a complete breakbulk / project cargo program can be customized according to the business requirements of potential shippers. With the capacity for growth and expansion, the port is a facilitator of trade and a part of Canada's transportation infrastructure, providing a marine gateway to global markets.
The website designed by Net Difference is a collaborative partnership effort between Saint John Port Authority, Irving Equipment, Logistec Stevedoring, Empire Stevedoring and Fleetway.
The Port of Saint John, the largest seaport in the Province of New Brunswick, Canada handles an average of 27 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. Centrally located in Atlantic Canada and only 100 Kilometers (60 miles) from the United States border, the Port of Saint John is one of Canada's key ports recognized for its strategic importance to the nation's trade and economy, being the closest Atlantic Canadian port to North American consumer markets and industrial centres.
